I Love Backpacking

I Love Backpacking!

Backpacking is fun, unpredictable and surprisingly exciting!

My first holiday was in Greece. I stayed in hotels that offered my basic needs; that’s good enough for me. Although my time was not enough to discover its secrets, their narrow lanes and mysterious alley ways I left with unforgettable memories and the urgency to plan my next destination.

It’s during this time I thought the adventure of ‘Backpacking’. I realised staying in hotels limited my contact with other travellers. And on such a young age I wanted to experience my holiday the best way possible.

I didn’t know where to begin or what to do. Everything is new to me but never once was I afraid or felt lost. To cut the story short and when all is said and done I wasted no time and headed back to Europe expecting the unexpected. France, Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Britain, Slovakia and Hungary just to name a few. I stayed in many different hostels, met lots of people some from home and others from countries I never knew existed. I fell in love with my new experience. The challenges that awaits me and most importantly the people I’m going to meet.

When people hear the words ‘backpacking’ or ‘hostels’ mostly they think of young people, sex, drugs, alcohol, staying in dodgy places, sharing a room with strangers, unsafe and dangerous. But my opinion is ‘that could be anywhere and could happen to anyone’.

Travelling totally depends on the person, where you want to be and what you want to do. Danger can be anywhere, at home or abroad and it can happen anytime to anyone. No doubt there are countries travellers should avoid altogether but the majority parts of the world are a safe haven and ready to be explored!

T.S Elliot said ‘The journey not the arrival matters’. When it comes to travelling that is very true, and backpacking is mainly all about the journey and sometimes where you end up rarely matters. Backpacking is all about the experience and the people. It’s more than just hostels and certainly not all about sex, drugs or alcohol. Backpacking is about challenges, treading on undiscovered territories and making the most of your time on foreign lands.

Above all, the countless people we meet. Some become our lifelong friends while the others leave unforgettable memories to last forever. Also, because backpacking normally involve just one person it helps us find ourselves. Discover what we want in life. Help us find our purpose, our meaning and pushes us to what we can or cannot do.

Backpacking will always be part of my travelling experience. It’s memorable, unforgettable and a soul searching journey – well that’s how I’d like to remember it. Backpacking is not all about heavy big bags, cheap thrills or working your way to find your next destination; it’s about yourself, the people, the country and most importantly the experience you’re going to have in your life, some may be bad but mostly all will be good. It’s about experiencing the unexpected and being in a place where anything can happen. Travelling can change our perspective, our point of views, our lives and help us be the person we were never once before.

Life is a journey, so go out there and backpack the world. Who knows you might find something that belongs to you!
